A half moon gave a little light to the dock and the warehouse where me and my men waited for Agostini. I had sent several guys there earlier to check for any traps or unwelcome surprises, then had them stay until we arrived for the meeting.

I was an hour early, but I bet Agostini expected that and probably had some of his own men watching to make sure we weren’t trying to plan an ambush on our end.

Everything looked as it should.

“Barone!”

The booming voice belonged to Romero Agostini as he stepped out into the open and stood there waiting for me.

“Agostini,” I called back.

He walked closer with caution and hesitation. Two of his men stood behind him and slightly to the side. It wasn’t until we were a few feet apart that I recognized him. I hadn’t seen him since Italy, when we were much younger.

If I remembered correctly, he had wanted to date my sister, but I refused. I thought he was bad news then, and obviously I was right.

“So you remember me,” Romero said.

I shrugged. “Vaguely.”

I stopped walking and stood where I was, my hands crossed in front of my body with my Glock held securely in my right hand and my legs braced apart. It was a non-threatening stance, but also let anyone who cared to pay attention know that I was prepared.

Romero didn’t have a weapon visible, but I wasn’t stupid enough to think he’d show up unarmed, no matter how many men he might have with him.

“How’s your sister?” Romero asked, trying to sound casual, as if we were sitting around a card table sharing a bottle of wine.

“What do you want, Romero?” I asked instead of answering his question. “Have you come to deny putting a hit on me?”

Even with the limited light from the moon, I still saw his eyes widen and eyebrows raise. “Why would I want you dead?” he retorted.

“For my territory? The way I hear it, you’ve been roughing up some of those under my protection.”

He shrugged his broad shoulders. “A misunderstanding.”

“Paolo!”

I jerked at the sound of my name being screamed by a feminine voice.

“Paolo! It’s a trap!”

Tiffany? My heart stopped in my chest when I saw Tiffany running toward me from the side. Her hair flew out behind her as her legs rapidly covered the distance between us. She kept screaming something, but I was too desperate to get her out of there to pay attention.

The sliver of moonlight briefly highlighted her features, and I saw fear and desperation drawing her face tight.

My men, as well as Romero’s, pulled their guns, all aimed at Tiffany as she continued toward me, blithely unaware of the danger. “Guns down!” I yelled, but it was too late.

A gunshot exploded, the sound reverberating and pounding in my head. With horror and more fear than I’d ever felt in my life, I saw Tiffany’s body jerk backward, and then she fell to the ground.
